LITERATURE

During our first quarter we will be studying the life and writing styles of various authors including Mark Twain, O. Henry, and Shirley Jackson. Students will be learning about the use literary devices of satire, dialect, allusion, diction, irony, and foreshadowing in these authors’ writings. Students will also be provided with writing assignments relating to the stories read.

ENGLISH

The first quarter will be a review of basic sentence structure and a comprehensive study of the verb including direct and indirect objects, predicate adjectives and predicate nominatives, verb phrases, and active and passive voice. We will also begin diagramming sentences.
