Westminster Abbey

The Collegiate Church of St. Peter

The picture to the right is of  the Westminster Abbey in London.

 

 

main information

     The Westminster Abbey is made of stone bearing masonry.  The architectural style is English gothic with Benedictine planning.  Henry Yevele was the major architect for the project.  The abbey's two western towers were built between 1722 and 1745 by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, constructed from Portland stone to an early example of a Gothic Revival design.

          Traditional Monastery is a burial site for English monarchs.  The Westminster Abbey is owned directly by the royal family!  Edward the Confessor began building the cathedral in 1055.  It was built on the remains of a Benedictine monastery.  It is located in London, England UK.

Many important events have taken place in the cathedral.  Such as the ones below!

-The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

- The funerals of the Princess of Wales and Queen Elizabeth I

- The marriages and funerals of almost all of the recent monarchs

-The Westminster Abbey is the most visited religious site in all of Britian.

-The height is 225 ft

-The Muniment Room is a growing collection of Church Documents

-The cathedral is built mainly of limestone, sandstone, and marble

 

The Westminster Abbey has many tourists attractions.  They include the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, Tombs of royalty, Shrine of Edward the Confessor, The Coronation Chair, Lady Chapel, Poet's Corner, Pyx Chamber, Undercroft museum, Nave, Cloisters, and Royal Chapels.
